If you are walking along the streets surrounding the Chicago Cultural Center at Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street, you might walk past the elusive artist known as The Peace Prophet. Currently unhoused, The Peace Prophet has received critical attention as an outsider artist. Although quiet and shy, she does sell her work on the streets to passersby.
She has been compared to Lee Godie, another Chicago fixture, who made her artwork on the streets and sold it on the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Peace Prophet utilizes inventive media in her projects, incorporating detritus found on the streets, such as Walgreens receipts or cheeseburger wrappers, and a recurring motif is the masked woman. Her work is held in the collection of Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, Chicago. If you happen to be walking near Millennium Park, keep an eye out. You just might see her!
